The Cheshire Cat is a beloved character that appears in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, typically shortened simply to Alice in Wonderland, written in 1865. The tale still enchants and enthralls readers today, with many book and film adaptations, and countless works of art featuring characters from the book.
The Cheshire Cat first appears when Alice is in the house of the Duchess, while the cook makes soup with too much pepper, causing all but the cook and the cat to sneeze. The Cheshire Cat then appears in a tree to point Alice in the direction of the March Hare’s house. He leaves, but his grin remains and Alice states, “I have often seen a cat without a grin but never a grin without a cat.”

Approaching the cat, I wanted to do a mix between the old Disney and the newer Burton versions. The most challenging part of the Cat was giving it that whimsical, mischievous quality that is always associated with the character.
