Before a model can be printed, the platform must be prepared so that the printed model will adhere to it. After reading all the instructions on page 11 of the User’s Manual, we chose to attach the FR-4 Board to the metal platform with the small alligator clips included in the accessory pack.  We placed one clip on each corner of the board; two on the front edge and two on the back edge. To avoid the nozzle hitting the clips, it is important to place them about ½ inch from the sides.

There are many other ways to prepare the platform such as covering a FR-4 board with blue painter’s tape or Kapton tape and attaching it to the platform. Also, a special glass plate can be used in place of the FR-4 board.  You can go to the article “Preparing the Platform of the Afinia 3D Printer” for more information.

On our first print we chose to use the FR-4 Board without any tape. The model being printed seemed to adhere adequately. However, there was some warping which we later discovered was due to the heating of the platform.
