I tried my hand at the cookie cutter app called Cubify Draw. The app was created by Cubify for the iPhone and the iPad. It’s easy to use: you draw shapes with your fingers and you are able to adjust line thickness and the height. There was also a handy little tool called auto-connect that would connect my unconnected lines (convenient!). One of the drawbacks of the app is that you cannot manipulate the lines you have drawn and it is a one-shot deal—once you take your finger off the screen, the design is considered finished.
The problem with the uneditable line is that each of my designs was rather shaky, with wobbly lines that I wouldn’t want to 3D print. Once I finished the design, I emailed the STL file to myself. However, when I tried to open the file on my computer, the file didn’t pull up. Whether this was user error on my part or a glitch in the app is unclear.
Overall, it’s a fun app to play around with and get used to 3D modeling software designed for the beginner. If you’re an artist or designer, the designs will likely turn out fine. For those with shaky hands, it will take a bit of practice to perfectly draw the shape you want in one go.
